Poland’s Border Guard has reported a sharp increase in tension along the eastern frontier with Belarus, describing an alarming rise in violent attempts to breach the border fence.
According to officials, groups of migrants — believed to be encouraged and assisted by Belarusian forces — have become increasingly aggressive in their efforts to cross into Polish territory. In one particularly shocking incident, a portable toilet was reportedly used as a makeshift battering ram to try to smash through the fortified border barrier.
Border Guard spokesperson Anna Michalska confirmed that patrols are now facing “daily, organized assaults”, with migrants throwing stones, sticks, and even metal objects at Polish officers. “They are not only trying to cross illegally,” she said, “they are actively attacking our personnel.”
The bizarre toilet incident, which took place near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne, was captured on thermal cameras. Footage shows a group of masked individuals pushing the large blue structure toward the steel barrier under cover of darkness. Border guards responded with tear gas and warning flares, eventually dispersing the crowd before any breach occurred.
Officials say these tactics are part of a coordinated campaign by Belarusian authorities, accusing them of “weaponizing migration” to destabilize the European Union’s eastern border. “This is not spontaneous,” one Polish commander said. “They are being directed, equipped, and transported to the fence — sometimes by armed Belarusian soldiers.”
So far in October alone, Polish forces have recorded over 2,000 attempted crossings, a significant jump compared to previous months. Several guards have been injured by projectiles and makeshift weapons during confrontations.
Despite the danger, Polish officers continue 24-hour patrols in freezing, muddy conditions. Reinforcements have been deployed, and drone surveillance has intensified across the border region.
EU officials in Brussels have condemned Belarus’s actions, calling them “a deliberate attempt to create chaos and humanitarian distress.” Meanwhile, humanitarian groups warn that many migrants trapped in the forests between the two nations face starvation, hypothermia, and abuse.
The portable toilet attack has quickly gone viral on Polish social media, symbolizing the bizarre and escalating nature of the border conflict. “It’s absurd, but it’s also dangerous,” wrote one user. “This shows how desperate — and manipulated — these people have become.”
For now, the situation remains volatile. Poland has vowed to “defend its border by any means necessary”, while Belarus continues to deny all involvement.
