he Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released dramatic body camera footage on Wednesday detailing a fierce shootout that occurred inside a South Los Angeles liquor store. The incident involved officers and an armed suspect who allegedly fired multiple rounds at the police.

The gunfight occurred on August 31, 2025, around 1:10 a.m., at a liquor store located near the corner of 9th Avenue and West Jefferson Boulevard.

Key details from the police report and video release:

  • The Encounter: Southwest Division patrol officers were conducting extra patrol inside the store when they made contact with 33-year-old Malik Salaah, who appeared to be concealing a firearm in his waistband.
  • The Shootout: When officers attempted to detain Salaah, he allegedly drew the firearm and began firing multiple rounds at the officers both while inside the store and as he exited. Surveillance video from the store reportedly shows the moment Salaah shot at the officers.
  • The Aftermath: Officers returned fire, striking Salaah at least once. Salaah fled on foot but was located by officers minutes later and taken into custody.
  • Consequences: Salaah was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. He was subsequently booked for the attempted murder of a peace officer.
  • Evidence: An unloaded 9mm pistol with a seated high-capacity magazine was recovered at the scene. No officers or other community members were injured during the incident.
