Police Rescue 6-Year-Old Found Locked Inside Shed; Parents Under Investigation

Police are investigating potential child neglect after officers rescued a 6-year-old girl who was found locked inside a backyard shed, alone, for an extended period of time, authorities confirmed.

The rescue occurred earlier this week after neighbors reported hearing a child crying behind a residence in a residential neighborhood. According to police, responding officers traced the sound to a small storage shed secured with a padlock.

Body-worn camera footage released by the department shows officers forcing the door open and finding the child inside. Police said the girl appeared frightened but unharmed and was immediately removed from the shed and provided medical attention.

“She was scared, confused, and alone,” said Police Sergeant Linda Ramirez. “Our officers acted quickly to get her out and make sure she was safe.”

Authorities say the shed was not equipped with proper ventilation, lighting, or climate control. Investigators have not disclosed how long the child had been inside but said it was “longer than a few minutes.”

The child’s parents were located shortly after the rescue. Police say the parents admitted the child had been left unattended but claimed it was a form of punishment and that they “did not believe it was dangerous.”

Child Protective Services took temporary custody of the girl while the investigation continues.

“Locking a child in an enclosed space, especially one designed for storage, raises serious safety concerns,” said CPS spokesperson Daniel Whitmore. “Our priority is ensuring the child’s immediate and long-term well-being.”

Neighbors expressed shock and anger after learning what had happened.

“We see that little girl outside all the time,” said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified. “I can’t imagine leaving a child locked in a shed. It’s horrifying.”

Legal experts say the parents could face charges ranging from child endangerment to neglect, depending on the findings of the investigation and whether prosecutors believe the act created a substantial risk of harm.

“This crosses the line from questionable discipline into potential criminal behavior,” said family law attorney Renee Collins. “The law is very clear when it comes to leaving young children in unsafe conditions.”

Police emphasized that the release of body-camera footage was intended to show transparency and highlight the seriousness of the situation, not to sensationalize the incident.

The child has since been placed with relatives pending further court proceedings. Authorities say counseling services are being arranged.

“This could have ended very differently,” Sgt. Ramirez said. “We’re thankful someone spoke up.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and police say additional charges may be announced in the coming days.
