Her baby was gone—but no one had told her heart that she was no longer a mother.
After losing her infant, the chimpanzee became unusually quiet. She spent hours sitting near the sleeping area, repeatedly building a small nest beside the empty place where her baby once rested.
Hoping to comfort her, the caregivers placed a stuffed baby chimpanzee near the secure transfer door.
At first, she only stared at it.
Then she slowly moved closer, lifted the toy with both arms, and pressed it tightly against her chest.
From that moment, she carried it everywhere.
When she walked across the enclosure, she carefully placed it on her back and reached behind to keep it from falling. At feeding time, she selected a piece of apple and gently held it against the toy’s mouth. When it did not respond, she left the fruit beside it as if saving the food for later.
That night, the security camera captured the most heartbreaking moment.
She gathered straw and leaves, built a nest, and placed the stuffed chimpanzee in the center. Then she curled her body around it, resting one protective hand across its back.
No one could know exactly what she understood. Perhaps she knew it was only a toy.
But for one quiet night, she was able to hold something close—and continue being the mother her heart had never stopped remembering.
